I mentioned last week that there’s a sudden spike in interest in Pinterest that’s sweeping newsrooms across the country.
There’s something sad about your secret little wonder tool being discovered by the masses. I’ve already noticed that certain feeds which were highly reliable sources of inspiration have been inundated with junk.
The real trouble is a VAST majority of these stories refer to the site as being a “catnip for women” and “female-centric”.
Here’s some examples:
Quick! Name the most perplexing social site you can think of. If you are a dude, it is probably Pinterest.
AND
Even though the site may be dominated by women’s interests, think of it this way: It’s essentially a guide telling men everywhere exactly what women want.
Neither of these things is a problem on its face. But I ask you:
1. Was Reddit’s rise covered by tech bloggers and journalists with aside paragraph’s like: “If you want to know what men like, go check out Reddit!”?
2. Did snarky bloggers make pie-charts like this one when Tumblr was on the rise pointing to gender stereotypes about how men use the web?
3. Did any tech analysts write blog posts about the “manliness” of any given tech startup?
4. Did tech experts ever try to appeal to women to use new social sites?
What the hell is so wrong with women finding a tool that works for them and using it to share DIY projects and party planning tips and great tech accessories… and yes, EVEN weddings and babies.
Let it be known: women are using the internet. And we’re driving more traffic than many of their misogynistic safe havens. Don’t like it? Then don’t use it.
