    Free Downloadable Wallpaper: Catching Fire

I re-watched the Hunger Games last week after seeing the new trailer for Catching Fire and I have to admit that I haven’t given Suzanne Collins and her story much credit. After a few months of utterly bland movies at the box office, I was reminded that we are on the cusp of some really fantastic film. And Catching Fire is sure to be near the top of that list. So let’s celebrate with a freebie!

    katniss

The astonishingly talented Natalie Willoughby sent me the sweetest email asking if she could create something for BGC readers and we agreed that Katniss was a kick-ass choice. I think you’ll agree that Natalie knocked it out of the arena, so to speak.

Geeky at Home: Printable Game of Thrones poster (freebie!)

Winter is here. The crows have three eyes. Arya’s wandering and apparently not all that good at sword fighting after all. Meanwhile in the real world, I’m working on some scary stuff. Put your heart out there and see if the world coddles or stomps it kind of stuff. And for some reason, this quote from Game of Thrones seems to capture that feeling best.

    free-poster

    “Fear cuts deeper than swords.”

I’m not taking down King’s Landing anytime soon, but fear… that’s a dangerous thing. It warps the mind and changes intention. It makes people foolish and steals their confidence. Sure a sword can kill you physically, but fear will kill your art.

So I made this quote into into a poster to remind myself that fear is the real enemy. And I must be brave. Free link to download after the jump.

Geeky at Home: Doctor Who Tea Party with free printables!

I’d like to make a bold declaration: tea parties are no longer just for 6 year old girls in tutus and baby showers anymore. In fact, I think the nerdy broads of the world ought to embrace them more fully. They’re the perfect weekend activity. Just a leisurely way to spend an afternoon without any concerns for a hangover the next day. Add a Doctor Who theme and I’m in.

Fab Freebies: Honest Facebook Timeline Banners

Sometimes I have the overwhelming urge to be honest. Apparently, so does everyone else on Facebook. So let’s embrace that idea for a moment.

    timeline-vacation

If you are ever in need of some really cool art that’s totally free and lives in the public domain, check out Vintage Printable. They provide high quality, free, public domain/out-of-copyright images for you to print or download. Most of them are sciency or earthy, but there’s literally thousands and thousands of cool images there. I’ve downloaded a few of my favorites, mocked them up in photoshop with some whiz-banging text that seemed appropriate and came up with some awesome new Facebook Timeline Banners that you can download and use for Freeezzzie. Pretty cool, right?

I hope you enjoy them. Why not spread some honesty in a non-ranty, non-TMI way? I’ve already got several likes on my new banner. (I chose the Vacation one…)

Fab Freebie: Spacey Windows 8 Tablet Backgrounds

My love of space is probably overly documented around here. But I just can’t help myself. The vastness of it. The unknowns. The knowns. They all mix together in galaxies and clouds and moons and suns and they feel like some version of heaven.

The words on the design say, “It’s Possible.” When you’re a creative soul, sometimes all the possibilities in front of you can be paralyzing. But knowing that you are able to take the risk, make the art and give it a shot… that’s a gift. Your dreams are possible. And I think that’s why NASA gives me so much hope. In all the vastness of space, a few solitary dreams of wild dreamers brought a man to the moon and a nation to their screens.

    It’s possible.

Perhaps this is why I so consistently surround myself with space images and one of the easiest ways for me to do that is with backgrounds on my devices. So today, I offer up some Windows 8 Tablet Backgrounds in these spacey designs:

    Download Moons Merging Here.

    saturn-v

From NASA: “The ring-region Saturnian moons Prometheus and Pan are both caught “herding” their respective rings in this image. Through their gravitational disturbances of nearby ring particles, one moon maintains a gap in the outer A ring and the other helps keep a ring narrowly confined.”

    Download Spiraling Beauty Here.

    space

    galaxy-v

From NASA: “This new view of spiral galaxy IC 342, also known as Caldwell 5, includes data from NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR. High-energy X-ray data from NuSTAR have been translated to the color magenta, and superimposed on a visible-light view highlighting the galaxy and its star-studded arms. NuSTAR is the first orbiting telescope to take focused pictures of the cosmos in high-energy X-ray light; previous observations of this same galaxy taken at similar wavelengths blurred the entire object into one pixel.”

The images are courtesy of NASA’s “Image of the Day Gallery” - which is a favorite place of mine on the World Wide Web. Bookmark it. It’s beyond wonderful.

Disclosure: I was given a Windows 8 Tablet to use as part of Intel’s Tablet Crew blogger outreach program. I was compensated to be part of this program. If you are interested in my thoughts on the product (Windows 8 Acer Iconia W5), you can read my review here.
