A Thank You Letter to Matt Smith

I have really come to love and adore the 11th. The 11th Doctor, that is.

    thanks-matt

While I know the Tennant fan girls outnumber me online and elsewhere, I feel like I’ve seen Matt Smith evolve from a great actor to an extraordinary one during his tenure as the most famous intergalactic time traveler in all the universe. So I decided to suspend regularly scheduled posts for the day to write a quick thank you note to the Doctor who made me fall back in love with bow ties.

    Dear Matt Smith,

    I think it’s when you said this…

“I am being extremely clever up here and there’s no one to stand around looking impressed! What’s the point in having you all?”

I laughed. And then I smiled. And then later on I smiled again to myself when no one was watching. I maybe even chuckled a little. Because you, in your very own goofy way, are charming.

The way you spun on your heels was charming. The way you pulled on the ends of your bow tie. The way you swished your hair - always to the left. The way you looked at River. The way you patted Rory on the back. The way you hugged Amy. The way you studied Clara. You have a knack for connecting people - making them feel special. And that goes beyond the characters. That goes down deep through digital film to nanotubes and into our television screens all the way to the eyeballs of your eager audience.

Please know that then you leave the show, you also leave me and many others with incredible memories and friendships. These are side effects of a cultural phenomenon that is bigger than any one actor or Steven Moffat or the BBC or even the big blue box - but you, specifically, made a mark on this world. You took a tradition and you made it your own. That’s no easy task. And now every time I put on a bow tie and slip my arms through a tweed blazer I will think of you. And I will be cool.

    With love and admiration,

    Liz

Tell me friends: what will you miss most about the 11th?

    Top 4: The 11th Doctor’s Best Episodes

One of the downsides of Doctor Who is that because of the way the show is written, it’s incredibly difficult to drop in on just any random episode for a quick hit of space and time traveling entertainment. In fact, it’s one of the reasons I had such a hard time getting into the show to begin with. But along the way, I’ve discovered a few stand alone episodes with each of the doctors that I truly love. So let’s start with the 11th Doctor. Here’s my top 4 episodes featuring the lovely Matt Smith.

    4. The Eleventh Hours: Season 5 - Episode 1

If there is ever a moment to step in on the series, it’s when a new Doctor comes around. And Matt Smith does quick work of making us all fall in love. “You’re Scottish, Fry Something.” It’s a saying that is really under-appreciated, if you ask me. Oh, and young Amy Pond! So cute.

Bow Ties are Cool for the Ladies

You guys, I really miss Matt Smith being all cute in my retinas every week.

Of course, what is a girl to do? Well, how about troll tumblr for cute bow tie gifs? Like this one. And this one. At some point, this has to get beyond trolling tumblr though. That’s why I just started collecting piles of bow tie beautiful shit that I can wear with basically any and every outfit.bow-ties

The best part? NO ONE KNOWS I’M PINING FOR WHO WHEN I WEAR ALL THIS SHIT. I promise I’m not wearing 6 bows in one outfit or anything… Maybe three. Or perhaps four. My co-workers probably just think I took a anti-depressant and decided I’m super twee or something.

Here’s the goods from the collage above if you want to go shopping:

    • Lime bow belt
    • Marc Jacobs Hair Bow
    • Gold hair clip
    • Bow Earrings
    • Gold Bow Necklace
    • Fashion Leopard Bow
    • Sterling Silver Ring

If you are also teetering on the edge of Who-pression, go read this awesome blog post from The Bloggess on Doctor Who Definitions. It’s lovely.

Time heals all wounds. For me, it’s only the beginning of the healing for a certain set of companions, but evil snowmen sure help. Being new to Who is a special trip and if you haven’t dove in, then you should. (Although as a Who-bie, can I just say, the Daleks don’t scare me?! I find the Cybermen far freakier… Am I alone in this?)

Oh, and the promise of the Errant Curl being everywhere as the new Star Trek movie shifts into marketing and public relations promotion bonanza.
