    Nerd Recipes: BGC is Three!

Is it me, or are there just a ton of birthdays in May? Maybe I notice it more because my own birthday falls in May, but according to Facebook, 68 of my friends have birthdays this month, including my husband and sister-in-law.

    CUPCAKE

It turns out this is also the third birthday of Being Geek Chic. A huge thanks to all of our readers who have been with Liz from the start, making this the vibrant and exciting community that it’s become.

And so in honor of my birthday, BGC’s birthday, and my 68 friends throughout the month, we’re bringing you a sweet way to celebrate.

RECIPE: Being Geek Chic Rainbow Birthday Cupcakes

NOTES: I prefer gel food colors better than liquid and the measurements are based on using a gel. I used a small-size cookie scoop for the cake batter but you could use a tablespoon-sized measuring spoon. These measurements are based on a Jumbo Pan . If you use a regular sized cupcake pan, you should use a teaspoon or limit to only three colors of batter.

    Equipment:

    • Jumbo sized muffin tin & liners
    • small sized cookie scoop
    • six small bowls, at least 1.5 cup capacity
    • Plastic, metal or disposable chopsticks (the food color may stain other wooden ones)

Nerd Recipes: A Great Gatsby Cocktail Hour

Another week, another geeky movie premiere, another delicious way to celebrate.

This week is only the second of many nerdy recipes to come this summer, with an amazing slate of nerdy movies premiering in the coming weeks.

    cocktail

Baz Luhrman takes on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic, The Great Gatsby. (Fun fact: Fitzgerald’s historic home in St. Paul is just blocks away from where I last lived in Minnesota!)

You’re probably thinking, wait? there’s an especially nerdy food associated with The Great Gatsby? And you might be right.

But you’re probably also getting a group of friends together to go see Gatsby this weekend. Skip the crowded bar for pre-movie drinks and host your very own Great Gatsby cocktail hour, worthy of the title character’s very own lavish bashes.

The secret to these nerdy recipes? Their high ratio of “looks fancy” to “amount of time to make.” So plenty of time to curl your hair and perfect your flapper look.

Nerd Recipes: Iron Man Arc Reactor Cookies

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve been going through Marvel withdrawal since last summer. So much so that on my last trip, I loaded up my iPad with The Avengers and settled into a chair at the Orlando airport to watch it for probably the hundredth time.

    cookies

Well, Avenger Geeks, our wait is over. Last week Marvel dazzled us with our first major glimpse at Thor: The Dark World, which hits theaters in November (two words: Loki’s. Hair.) This week, the third installment of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man lands.

Hopefully, the film will answer the question we’ve all been wondering: if the Mandarin (which, if I’ve gleaned correctly, is the villain facing off with Iron Man this bout) is really such a Big Bad, then why, why, why wouldn’t the Avengers reassemble to handle it?

These cookies may not be strong enough to fuel Tony Stark’s heart or suit of voice-activated robotics, but they should be good enough to get you through a pre-premiere Iron Man marathon or a midnight showing.

Let’s make some Iron Man Arc Reactor Cookies!

Nerd Recipes: Winter is Here! Coconut Cake Snowballs for Game of Thrones

    cakes

It was a big TV weekend at our house. Doctor Who and Game of Thrones are back. This calls for something delicious. Resident food expert Emma Carew Grovum whipped up the perfect treat inspired by the land of direwolves and frozen zombies. These Coconut Cake Snowballs may not scare away a White Walker, but they are delicious.

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    Cake:
1 white or yellow cake recipe (you can use a box, I used this recipe)

    Vanilla frosting:

    • 2 sticks butter at room temperature
    • 4-6 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1-2 tsp milk or cream, as needed
    • 1 bag sweetened coconut flakes

Nerd Recipes: Fish Sticks and Custard

It’s really a hallmark of the Amy Pond era. Fish sticks and custard. Honestly, kind of eww when I think about it. But then I remember that my favorite combo is salty and sweet… so maybe… just maybe. Yes, indeed, this can be delicious.

    final-ffandcustard

When I put our resident food genius Emma Carew Grovum up to the task, she came up with a version that is sure to please the masses. It’s certainly a little more palatable for the non-weird eaters out there.

Nerd Recipes: A Sonic “Screwdriver” (video)

I can’t think of a single example of the Doctor drinking alcohol ever in the series, but that didn’t stop me from taking the opportunity to make a green cocktail. You guys, it’s green. And not like, lime green. It’s practically freaking electric green. It’s alcoholic. It’s delicious.
