I love when people link to my blog (hint, hint), so I’m going to make a bigger effort around here to link to other blogs who post great geeky stuff for the ladies. Here’s our first go around!Rorschach Inkblot Manicure DIY from Love Maegan
When Geeks Wed pointed out this really cool DIY manicure from Love Maegan. While Maegan never mentions Watchmen, I couldn’t help but think that this would have been a fun manicure to wear to the premiere of the movie a few years back. With the help of some painter’s tape and white and black polishes, you can create this incredible look.
JK Rowling announces The Casual Vacancy
I’ll see you at midnight outside the local bookstore on September 27, 2012. I can’t believe it’s going to be here so soon.
This geek and that geek.
The Mary Sue has been meme-ing it up this week by giving credit to the actors who are party of multiple geek properties. It’s all based on a fake picture of Sir Ian McKellen that says “I’m Gandalf and Magneto. Get over it.” They’ve ID’d 17 actors who also embody multiple icons in geek culture.
Nerd shoes craftacular
I’m incredibly jealous of this Geek Femme shoe party. The Geek with Curves had a party last weekend with girlfriends where they all made geeky shoes. A Tardis, R2-D2 and Battle of Yavin flats are all featured here. Even though I couldn’t be there, I’m happy to report that my Wonder Woman flats tutorial was helpful for these talented ladies.
Rue and Cato: Popular baby names for 2012
Two smaller characters in The Hunger Games series are trending in delivery rooms across the USA. I thought for sure that Gale would beat out Cato and Rue, but alas! The Mary Sue reports a couple possible reasons why the names are trending.
Happy weekend everyone!

Remember my glasses sweater DIY? I wore mine to workkkkkkk!
Here’s what I’m wearing with it:
1. Glasses Sweater: I DIY’d it! Here’s the tutorial. It cost me only $8 to make.
2. OPI Mermaid Tears nail polish: $9 on Amazon
3. Love Life Leather Bracelet: $14.99 at Target, J. Crew mint rhinestone bracelet: no longer available, Kate Spade Uptown Downtown Bangle: no longer available, but there are some on eBay.
4. Skirt: I DIY’d. Knee high socks from Target. Mary Jane heels are vintage.
I’m loving the warm weather in Minneapolis right now. More skirts and dresses are in order!
I’m always looking for a new way to make my manicure pop. I’m not into the crackle trend and I’m certainly not a girl who sports French tips. That’s why I love this trick.
After you paint your nails, use this simple trick to make your nails pop for free.
All you need is a Sharpie!
1. Paint your nails the standard way. Let them dry. Do NOT apply a top coat just yet.
2. Draw on your shape of choice. I’ve done a lightning bolt (LEFT) for the Harry Potter premiere. I once spelled out the word “LOVE” on Valentine’s and the Apple logo for when the iPhone 4 came out. This works with all types of Sharpie colors, including the Paint pens. I love the gold ones… A used a gold one to make a heart on my thumb in this video. (You can see it best at the 0:56 mark.)
3. Let it dry for a couple hours. Just go do something for a while. Then, put the top coat on. If you put the top coat on the Sharpie marker too soon, it will be bleed and make a mess.
Enjoy!
You need:
Nail polish
Sharpie
Top Coat
Thanks to welcome-to-district-12 for posting the first look at the Hunger Games polish colors and names from China Glaze.
They will be available March 1st, 2012.
I’m sort of disappointed by some of the names, because I would have loved one or two named after some of the more wildly adorned Capitol characters. However, the color scheme seems to have the right mix of light, dark and shine.
What do you think?
I had a DIY fail last night.
I was trying to do something like a Halloween inspired crescent moon with a similar technique that is described here.
Except it just doesn’t look right. I used a clear polish, then the black glitter glue with an extreme shine top coat.
The result: A Wooly Willy inspired manicure.
As you can imagine, it was not the desired result.
If you’ve never wandered upon HelloGiggles, it’s about time you did. Writer and internet personality Molly McAleer is one of three (famous) women behind the site which is totally focused on good old fashioned lady news. She currently writes for the CBS show 2 Broke Girls which features the indie-favorite Kat Dennings.
The mission statement behind the site is one I can totally get behind:
[HelloGiggles is] the ultimate entertainment destination for smart, independent and creative females. Everything hosted on the site will be lady-friendly, so visitors need not worry about finding the standard Boys Club content that makes many entertainment sites unappealing to so many of us.
The content that McAleer writes is pretty awesome too. My favorite posts are ones titled “Get Yo’ Nails Did” about interesting ways in which you can give your nails some personality. Check out these nails with book pages, sort of decoupaged on top. It’s pretty awesome. It should come as no surprise to viewers of last night’s 2 Broke Girls that the two main characters got into a fight over a missed manicure appointment. I love when Internet life comes into convergence with our media. It gives you an idea of the personalities behind the shows. In fact, here’s a behind the scenes on what Kat Dennings has been wearing on the show.
