Nerd Recipes: Winter is Here! Coconut Cake Snowballs for Game of Thrones

    cakes

It was a big TV weekend at our house. Doctor Who and Game of Thrones are back. This calls for something delicious. Resident food expert Emma Carew Grovum whipped up the perfect treat inspired by the land of direwolves and frozen zombies. These Coconut Cake Snowballs may not scare away a White Walker, but they are delicious.

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    Cake:
1 white or yellow cake recipe (you can use a box, I used this recipe)

    Vanilla frosting:

    • 2 sticks butter at room temperature
    • 4-6 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1-2 tsp milk or cream, as needed
    • 1 bag sweetened coconut flakes

Are those direwolf teeth hanging from your neck?

    mint

I have a new favorite color combination. Mint and bronze. Mint and silver. Mint and gold.

Or to put it another way: mint and metallic, basically. It’s lovely combo and it’s taking my wardrobe by storm. For work, for play, it’s a hit with my brownie colored hair.

In addition, I’m quite a bit fan of my new bone necklace. At first, I was a little disappointed because the bones were much smaller than I thought they would be, but I’m OK with it now. I’ve decided that they kind of look like teeth, which is an interesting twist, because now they make me think of direwolf teeth.

This fact, of course, makes me realize that Game of Thrones needs to come back stat. Of course, HBO did me the favor of bringing back GIRLS, which means I’m temporarily distracted from the utter lack of Who, Sherlock and Thrones in my life, but you know.

Here’s the duds in the pics:

Geeky at Work: To Pins, my new favorite accessory

Pins, or broaches if you will, have come in and out of style for generations. Walk through any vintage store and you’ll find the bizarre (I once found a bejeweled cat head…) and the cute (birds are common) - but peruse the internet and you’ll discover options which can only be described as the ultimate in geek chic.

    pins

Why do I say that? Because they are so versatile and so affordable. For around $10, you’re getting an accessory you can pin on a sweater, a blazer or a bag. You can pin it to a scarf or even bundle a few together and create a smorgasbord of geekery.

Aha: they are also gender neutral!

And yet, they’re subtle. They’re small enough that they don’t overwhelm an outfit, yet distinct enough that other clever geeks will be able to call them out easily.

Here are some of my current favorites from around the internets:

    1. Hunger Games Mockingjay pin
    2. Star Trek Insignia pin
    3. Game of Thrones Stark Shield pin
    4. TARDIS Pin Badge
    5. Hogwarts House Pin Set

I’m working on my collection, which includes a Hogwarts House Crest, a Mockingjay, a “BAM!” and a pair of specs, but I think I’ll be spending some cash to pick up that Game of Thrones shield too.

This Week in Geek: Giveaway Winner, Branding Game of Thrones & Downton Abbey Trailer

First, I want to start by thanking everyone for taking part in the giveaway this week. Your tweets were funny and charming.

    So, I won’t delay.

This week’s winner is: Sarah Blankenship

Please email me at beinggeekchic(at)gmail(dot)com for more instructions. Thanks again to everyone who entered. I’ll keep doing giveaways as long as you all keep enjoying them and entering!

Alright, shall we talk about the things that made my geeky heart pit-pat this week? For starters, I love when designers take something we all got used to being somewhat ugly or boring and make it pretty.

    Examples? Of course!

    See Branding 10,000 Lakes.

See the United States Postal Service reimagined.

This week, Game of Thrones got their turn:

Game of Thrones gets a rebrand courtesy of a Nike Designer
Game of Thrones fan Darrin Crescenzi noticed that while the GoT books had a lot of text-based description of each of the houses and their sigils, there weren’t many depictions of them artistically. Suddenly, a design and then a print is born. Unfortunately, only 250 were made, but if you cross your fingers (and ask him nicely on Twitter) you might discover another run in the works.

    New Downton Abbey Trailers!
To say that this is giving me heart butterflies is the understatement of the year. I paused this about 50 times to get a good look at the new butler - but alas. Too damn fast, ITV.

As you know, I’m a writer. Therefore, I write things. This week, I wrote these:

This Week in Geek: Game of Thrones baby names & smart kids on Geek & Sundry

Sometimes, I find myself shocked and sickened by the actions of others. Today is one of those days. My hope is that the people of Colorado find peace. That kind of ugliness has no place in our world. It’s a tragedy and a shame.

There’s nothing else I can say, instead we should all hope for a swift and just resolution.

    Babies getting nerdy names
In other news, Arya is still the most popular baby name of the year, but guess who is joining her? THEON! WHY OH WHY is the most evil person in all of the Games of Thrones verse ranking so high? The name is #8 on the list. And guess who else is inspiring copycats? Downton Abbey’s Lady Sybil! Sybil is #5, Gatsby is #11 and Senna (a Twilight character, who knew?) is #7.

Written by a Kid? Yes, please!
Ever since geek queen Felicia Day announced Written by a Kid for Geek and Sundry, I’ve been patiently waiting for the first episode. It seriously does not disappoint. Kids have a great way of making adult decision making seem so silly.

This week, I also wrote some things in other places on the interwebs…
