Being Geek Chic

sidebar-about

me

Being Geek Chic is the yammerings of a Midwestern nerd named Elizabeth Giorgi. My vision impairment is real, which is frustrating because I really would like to see a 3D movie.

5 reasons to get a library card

I spent far more money than I’d care to admit on books last year, so here’s to renewing my library card and finding more reasons to use it. Here’s my top 5:

    1. Saving money: I can walk to my local branch and their online service lets me order the books I want and emails me when I can pick them up. Could it be any more convenient?

    2. Audio books: I’ve always wanted to listen to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in audiobook format, but couldn’t stomach the $27.95 price tag. Harry Potter is even more! My library lets you rent them for 2 weeks, which gave me plenty of time to upload them to my iTunes library and listen while I code, edit, you name it.

    3. Supporting local government services: It sounds silly, but supporting and using your library is one of the best ways to get use out of your tax dollars. Many libraries are closing across my state and others because of tighter budgets. The best way to ensure yours stays open? Use it!

    4. Getting to know your community: The people that visit your library are your neighbors and you probably haven’t met most of them. We all feel better about our communities when we know the people that live there with us.

    5. Reading more diligently: I find that when I have a “due date” I read more quickly and regularly. Nothing to bust those procrastination tendencies like having a return date to work towards.
