Geeky at Home: LEGO at the dinner table

Remember when I showed you my tutorial for making gradiated LEGO art a few weeks back? Well, I was making some small adjustments to my dinner table for a small party this weekend and got inspired. LEGO at the dinner table! And thus, Geeky at Home is born.

So what’s Geeky at Home? Well, it’s my effort to show you how to seamlessly and chicly integrate geeky decor items into your home design so that people won’t be drawn to the randomness of it all, but rather, the effortless way you have expressed your nerd-dom in your abode.

For my first try at this, I’m sharing how I integrated the gradiated LEGO art into my tablescape. First thing’s first, look for pairings in odd numbers. Three or 5 are good numbers for the kitchen table, but you also need to think about scale. I was dealing with 3 fairly large pieces which are all bright and have different colors and textures. More than 3 would create competition for attention and detract from the overall look.

Second, choose texture and colors that play off of each other. In other words, I have bright LEGO in a vase, so bright yellow cloth napkins and bold magenta flowers play off that well. Don’t get too matchy, either. Blue and green napkins would be too obvious and boring.

Last, place your items in an arrangement that works from all angles. Since a dinner table seats people all the way around, they should be able to see each item from where they sit. Don’t just simply place your items in a straight row though either. It’s boring and looks like you placed them there right before your guests showed up, whereas this setting looks like it could have been there all week.
