I’m addicted to my blog, but that doesn’t mean I’m always ripe for ideas on what to write about. In fact, there are times where I stare at my blog hopelessly for an idea to come to me. However, I think after more than 13 months of writing this blog, I finally have a system that works for me.
Inspiration for blog content can come from the strangest places…
1. Re-read blogs you used to visit a lot, but then stopped reading. There are several blogs that fall into this category for me. I was an avid daily reader of Apartment Therapy for years, but I suddenly dropped off it sometime 10 months ago. When I go back and read the archives now, I see two things:
2. Come up with a mission statement. I know it sounds over-the-top and super business-y, but it will help you immensely. My mission statement for BGC? “To provide content that celebrates the life of a grown-up woman geek. From books to DIY to movies and helpful hints on being who we are, BGC will always be informative, instructive and complimentary of this lifestyle.” Once I had that, I could start to think about what that means in the form of content. Lady Geek of the Week was one of the first concepts I dreamed up. To me it not only celebrates incredible grown-up female nerds, but it was also informative to know how these people got to where they are today.
3. Don’t get obsessed with hits. When I first started blogging, I would get so distraught when a post that I worked VERY hard on wasn’t getting a ton of reception. It can make you especially bitter when something you spent 5 minutes on gets oodles of hits. Hits are important, but do what makes you happy and the right audience will find you.
