So often I see tacky fall decorations at the store that just don’t make sense. A glittery bushel of leaves? Foam pumpkins covered in odd graphic patterns? Now don’t get me wrong, I love some pumpkins and gourds in the fall, but why don’t we just look outside and bring autumn indoors for FREE?
Here’s some easy ways to do it:
1. Birch logs: In the fall, birch is just a beautiful tree, but it’s also the time my family cuts down masses of birch for burning in the winter. Go for a walk and chop some wood. Let them dry thoroughly in your garage for 48-72 hours so that you don’t end up with bugs in the house. I put my logs in a basket and leave them in the entryway, bathroom, and kitchen. I leave these logs EVERYWHERE. They’re just so beautiful and remind me of the outdoors.
PLEASE REMEMBER: For every tree you chop down, plant 2 more! It’s all of our responsibility to help the planet.
2. Watch for nuts: In the fall, leaves don’t just fall from the trees. Acorns and nuts will also drop from the branches. Snap those up wherever you see them. They make a great centerpiece in a vase or jar.
3. Pick up sticks: This is the simplest, most chic thing to do. Next time you’re outside, look for broken branches that have fallen from the trees. I will grab hundreds of them throughout the year and let them dry for 24 hours in the garage. Then, take any gold, silver or whatever color paint you like and paint those suckers. Let them dry again and put them on a vase, or lay them vertically on your table. I’ve seen similar products sold for up to $30 at West Elm and this is TOTALLY free.
