Guest Post: A Potter Christmas Soundtrack

Guest post by Adam Giorgi, who also happens to be my brother. He’s a writer, gamer, reader and Potter head. He also made this cool comic featuring myself and Mr. Geek Chic. Check out his blog: Geek-Attack. On twitter: @adamgiorgi

Are you sick of Christmas music yet? Who could blame you? Ad men and retailers have been running it on blast since mid-November, so as the big day draws near, you could have a coronary from hearing “Rudolph” for the seventeenth time.

Perhaps I can help, with a little assistance from Harry Potter.

The task: Create a Christmas playlist made up entirely of music from Potter soundtracks. The goal: a CD I could sneak in at the family gathering that would blend in without a hitch. It would delight the few Potter lovers in my family, while not prompting pause or confusion from the uninitiated.

It wasn’t as hard as you might think. With their school-year structures, the Potter films contain many iconic Christmas scenes. In addition, a winter-y vibe permeates much of the Potter world (there’s a reason the recreated Hogsmeade in balmy Florida is covered in fake snow). And thanks to ABC Family, a Potter film is never far away each December.  So, with all that in mind, I present to you what I have christened, “A Very Harry Christmas”.

       1. Christmas at Hogwarts (Sorcerer’s Stone)
       2. Hogwarts Forever! and The Moving Stairs (SS)
       3. Entry into the Great Hall and the Banquet (SS)
       4. Introducing Colin (Chamber of Secrets)
       5. Fawkes is Reborn (CoS)
       6. The Patronus Light (Prisoner of Azkaban)
       7. Harry in Winter (Goblet of Fire)
       8. Potter Waltz (GoF)
       9. Dumbledore’s Army (Order of the Phoenix)
      10. The Room of Requirements (OotP)
      11. The Kiss (OotP)
      12. Loved Ones and Leaving (OotP)
      13. In Noctem (Half-Blood Prince)
      14. Harry & Hermione (HBP)
      15. The Weasley Stomp (HBP)
      16. The Friends (HBP)
      17. Ron’s Speech (Deathly Hallows Part 1)
      18. The Resurrection Stone (Deathly Hallows Part 2)
      19. A New Beginning (DH2)
      20. Reunion of Friends (CoS)
      21. Christmas at Hogwarts (SS)

If you’re on Spotify, all you have to do is click here to listen to “A Very Harry Christmas”.

A few notes on the creation of this list:

    1. I strived to include at least one song from each film. Though this presented a challenge in a couple of cases (The Prisoner of Azkaban and Deathly Hallows Part 1), it prevented me from relying too heavily on one film, such as Sorcerer’s Stone with its John Williams-powered melodies sometimes conjuring memories of Home Alone.

    2. The most iconic Potter themes were immediately off the table. That meant no Hedwig’s Theme or Harry’s Wondrous World, which could break the illusion even for someone with little knowledge of the Wizarding World.

    3. I attempted to hit on themes that Harry Potter shares with our holiday season: a sense of magic and wonder in the air, the importance of friends and family, etc. In this way, the ornate, magical vibe present in most Potter music was a perfect fit, and some of the warm, understated, lesser-known tracks from Nicholas Hooper’s work in Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince were equally valuable.

Whether you use this playlist or take inspiration from it to create one of your own, we hope this post helps you inject a little Harry Potter magic into your holiday season. If you pop it in at your family gathering this year, be sure to let us know how it goes!
