Admittedly, I have only seen a handful of episodes with the first 8 doctors from Doctor Who. It’s not because I’m not interested. It’s mostly that it’s just taking me a while. And since most episodes really stand alone, I don’t mind jumping around between seasons and doctors a bit. Here’s four episodes that really are memorable for me:
4. The Dalek Invasion of Earth - Season 1 - First Doctor
When I first started watching Doctor Who, I honestly found the Daleks annoying. They were so utterly un-scary that they were laughable to me. They’re slow and clunky and as long as you get out of the way of their Extermination ray, you’re good. This episode helped me to understand where the baddies got their start and made them at least a little scarier.
3. Colony in Space: Season 8 - Third Doctor
We’ve known forever that the Doctor drives the Tardis wrong. I’ve often wondered while watching the new series why it never breaks down. Welp for the third Doctor, that’s exactly what happened. And he was extra eager to explore the universe when he got the Tardis up and running again in this episode.
2. The Five Doctors - 20th Anniversary Special
With the 50th anniversary special coming out soon, many have speculated that Steven Moffat would bring doctors back for the series. Knowing SM’s track record, I doubt it. But, if you want to know what that’s like, check out the 20th anniversary special, which brought together the first five. Watching old doctors and new doctors together plays weird tricks on your mind, because you realize that all the Doctor’s worst qualities are also his best and seeing himself have to face those things is a strange experiment.
1. Pyramids of Mars - Season 13 - Fourth Doctor
Tom Baker is universally loved by classic Whovian fans. (Or so it seems.) I really wanted to know what Sarah Jane was originally like after seeing her pop up during the 10th doctor’s run. This episode perfectly captures the dynamic between the two. Plus, the Egyptian gods as aliens are not corny to watch, which is the seriously difficult part of watching the originals.
I’ve been warned to just avoid all Doctor Who episodes from the 80s… with the exception of the 20th anniversary special. So what do you think? What episodes from the original series do you love to watch?
We’re enjoying 30 days of Doctor Who during the month of March on Being Geek Chic! Since the show is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary and Series 7 is rebooting at the end of the month, it seemed like the perfect time to reflect on why we love the Doctor, wish we could apply for the job of Companion and create our own Sonic Screwdrivers. So while we can’t board the TARDIS, we can spend a ridiculous amount of time replicating Amelia Pond’s signature look. Tell your friends and stick around for more. Allonsy!
