Q: What has led you to your passion?
A: I think my inclination towards the arts has always been a defining characteristic about me. As a child I was more interested in glitter glue than dolls and it’s been a pretty linear path since then. As an introvert who struggled with social anxiety throughout my childhood and teenage years, it’s always been easier for me to express myself in a visual way.
Q: How has your process as an artist evolved over time?
A: I started practicing self-portraiture when I was about fourteen. I had become interested in photographing people, but was too anxious to share my creative process with another person. Most of my photographs then consisted of me making myself tiny and winged (I loved anything fey) in whatever free photo-editing program I could find. As I matured my work became more conceptual and narrative-driven. I still use myself in photographs because I like the idea of a photograph having only a single perspective - the photographer’s. I think of my work as personal mythologies that waver somewhere between fact and fiction.
Q: If you could take any fictional character out for a drink, whom would you choose, and what would you drink?
A: It would have to be the unnamed narrator from Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca - the mistress of Manderly. This was the first adult novel I ever read and the enigmatic narrator has always been intriguing. Since the book was published in 1938, we would have to be drinking martinis.
Q: When did you first realize you were “geeky?”
A: Truthfully, I don’t really consider myself to be all that “geeky” - although I definitely have a lot of interests that cross into that realm. I’ve definitely always been uncompromising about the things I like. In elementary school I wore splash pants and a Wolverine hat everyday and as a teenager I did this weird thing where I would go to school intentionally looking like a doll or an elf. I think it’s important to be who you want to be, without trying to conform to any terms or labels, whether they are “mainstream” or not.
Q: What would you tell your 13-year-old self?
A: “Everything you think you know is wrong… and your 23-year-old self is incredibly insensitive towards the feelings of 13-year-olds.”
