Let’s make the 3 finger salute happen on Twitter

Twitter amazes me sometimes. Going on and on about The Hunger Games manages to make me happy with every single character I type…

So when things like this happen with fandom, I’m just fulfilled:

@jonmarcbauer Oh! That is such a great question… Maybe: ||| …. What do you think?

    — Elizabeth Giorgi (@lizgiorgi) March 14, 2012

So I’m thinking… we got to make this happen. Here’s what I came up with:

The Hunger Games three finger salute...

    Help me make this happen!

Not just because I think it’s awesome, but because we have to somehow survive until next Thursday at midnight… together!

Geeky at Home: Host a Hunger Games dinner party

For the midnight premiere of The Hunger Games next week, I’m going to host a dinner party. As a person who loves a good party, I put a lot of thought into each of the details, so planning this party is no exception.

I bet there are a lot of other folks out there that will be hosting a party, so I thought I’d share some ideas in hopes of getting you to share some with me.

The food: I’m relying heavily on Emily Ansara Baines’s Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook, which includes a lot of incredible bread recipes. However, I’m also going to head out to a nice cheese shop and pick up some goat cheese in honor of Prim. I think it will be a nice little touch to add to the night.

The music: There’s a lot of great music already being released from the official Soundtrack, but these two tracks from Feist and Jenny Lewis will be wonderful additions to the mood of the evening.

    Pretty Bird by Jenny Lewis

    Graveyard by Feist

Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars (Hunger Games Soundtrack)

The decor: I picked up a small fishbowl (above) at the store and wrote all my friends names on slips of paper. I figure a reaping will be in order… But what should we do when we get picked? Feats of strength?

I bought some white and yellow flowers in honor of a certain tribute from District 11 and I’ve got a crown bowl to represent the Victors of the 74th Hunger Games. I also made a tablecloth with the names of all the tributes and their districts (DIY coming this weekend!)

Are you going to host a Hunger Games dinner party? What will you do for your party?

    DIY Weekend: Katniss Everdeen costume

If you’re planning on going to the midnight premiere of The Hunger Games, you’re going to need something to wear. So, why not dress as Katniss?

For Halloween this year, I dressed up as my favorite Tribute of all time and gathered my tips on how to make the costume.

There are photos and tutorials on each part of the outfit here:

    1. DIY Mockingjay pin: You need one safety pin, some gold glitter, glue and thick cardstock. I did this project for $0, but it should cost you more than a buck or two if you need one of two of the supplies.
    2. DIY Arrows: You need 12-24 inch dowels, ribbon, feathers, tape, thick cardstock and glue. This project cost me $8 for the feathers and the dowels.
    3. DIY Quiver: You need one piece of poster board, tape and a roll of ribbon. This project cost me $1 for the poster board.

You could always go to the store and buy the Mockingjay pin and buy all the  props, but why would you do that when you can save yourself some cash?

If you want tips on what to wear with each accessory that might already exist in your wardrobe, like pants, boots and a jacket, then this photo should help.

I’ve also added a handy Hunger Games DIY navigation on the left hand side of the site, so as I add more things, you’ll have an easy place to find them.

Who else is going nuts just waiting for the movie? I’m going to have a Hunger Games party with my friends and make a bunch of the meals from the Unofficial Hunger Games cookbook by Emily Ansara Baines.

    Happy Hunger Games everyone!

    Being Geek Chic’s Pinterest boards

I just want to take a minute to plug some of the fun Pinterest boards I’ve been working on, because I think they might be helpful for some of you too.

A couple weeks back, I attended Alt Summit, where Ben Silberman (the founder of Pinterest) discussed what he saw as the future of Pinterest. One key word? Discovery. He couldn’t be more right. I’ve discovered Christmas gifts, DIY ideas and mutual interests with friends because of pin boards.

Here’s hoping you discover something lovely on one of BGC’s pin boards:

    Katniss Everdeen is Awesome:

A collection of Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games series inspired designs, looks and ideas.

Consider it your central source for lots of chic arrows.

    You should follow it if:

    1. You love the Hunger Games.

    2. You want ideas for what to wear to the midnight premiere.

    3. You want to be Katniss for Halloween.

    4. You’re suffering from HG withdrawals.

    Beautiful Tech:

Who says technology can’t be chic?

This pin board gathers the best in tech accessories and tech-related products for your viewing and shopping pleasure.

    You should follow it if:

    1. You need a new tech accessory.

    2. You love tech cases more than your tech.

    Nerd Fashion:

This is my newest Pin Board, but I expect it will have a lot of potential.

The whole notion that you can’t find chic geekwear is no longer true.

    You should follow it if:

    1. You enjoy the weekly Geeky at Work posts.

    2. You are shopping for new clothes.

    3. You like fashion eye candy.

What kind of cool pin boards have you created? Next week, I’d like to compile a list of other awesome pin boards to follow, so send your suggestions to beinggeekchic(at)gmail(dot)com.
