    Post Con Coma Survival

So you’ve just gotten back from Comic Con. Your feet feel like lumps from a decrepit tree. Your throat hurts from yelling over crowds. You’ve taken two showers, but you still smell weird. And yet, you’re happy. Weirdly, contentedly happy.

    That’s the post Con Coma.

If you’re just getting back from your first Con, here’s what I always recommend:

    1. Sleep. Sleep as much as you possibly can. Take naps at any random moment just because you have a free hour and it’s possible to squeeze it in. Sleep on your ride to work if you can. Sleep on your lunch. You will need this sleep so you don’t cry.

    2. Don’t look at all you pictures right away. Sometimes the truth about life is that looking at happy things can actually be sad. Just watch Inside Out to see what I mean. Give it a few weeks before you get into all the feels.

    3. Make fun plans for the week after Con. Go out to dinner and a movie with your girlfriends. Get to yoga every night. Start planning your next vacation. Take on your next big craft project. It’s really hard not to look back at the weekend and not feel a bit of “wah wahs” about it. So, make plans and distract yourself.

    4. Engage in your nerdery with verve. A midnight premiere is a perfect decision post Con. Binging Netflix? Another perfect decision. Basically, anything that allows you to escape into a fandom you’ve been ignoring or find a new fandom all over again.

    5. Don’t start planning for next year. Yet. The Baker Street Babes always take a hiatus after SDCC before starting all the emails on SherlockeDCC. Even if it’s just talking about how to do things better next year, it’s so much more articulate and helpful to wait a month or two to dive into details.

So tell me, what do you do after a Con to get through it?

    A Speechless Comic Con

I’ve been trying to figure out what to put in this blog post for the last two days and after not being able to put words together, I’m just going to type until there aren’t any more things to type. It starts with THANK YOU. Thank you to the people who came out for Geek Go Glam. Thank you to the sponsors who made it happen. (High fives to Think Geek Solutions, Quirk Books, WattPad, Kombucha on Tap and High Voltage Magazine!) Thank you to the human volunteers that came out and helped us put all the details together.

And of course: Thank you to my love Megan, AKA The Nerdy Girlie for being an incredible co-host and friend throughout the entire process. I am constantly amazed by the beauty of your soul and spirit and you have added so much to my life. I really believe that I’ve become a better person because of that woman.

Life handed Megan and I very major blows about three months ago at the exact same time. Having a broken heart is a lot like having a limb removed, because you find yourself so sad and so vulnerable, grasping for a hand in the breeze that isn’t there. In so many ways, Megan’s hand was the hand that got me through those moments, both physically when we were together and emotionally when we were apart. And it could have caused a lot of different things to happen, but the thing it really did was make us incredibly close. And it gave us the courage to take on a grand distraction. Geeks Go Glam started as that distraction. But in the end, it really came together because she and I came together to support each other. And I’m incredibly proud of that.

San Diego Comic Con can be an exhausting endeavor, but it’s about these moments in time that get lost on us during the rest of the year when our lives get busy. It’s about coming together and celebrating the things that make our hearts sing. For me, my fellow lady geek bloggers are one of those things.

SherlockeDCC was an incredible success in its third year for the same reason. And we at the Baker Street Babes owe so many people thank yous for that too. I promise to get to that in a future blog post. Instead, I’m going to focus on the now and say: as I go about the last 24 hours of this Con, I am reminded to hold some hands for a few more hours. Hug harder and longer, because we can. And to wish each other beautiful blessings of bravery and grace on our journeys during the rest of the year. Live long and prosper, my friends. Thanks for being part of my journey.

Introducing Geeks Go Glam Giveaway Sponsor: ThinkGeek Solutions

Sometimes awesome things happen. Right now is one of those times. Why? Because I’m happy to announce that the awesome giveaways for Geeks Go Glam are being provided by ThinkGeek Solutions!

Many people know the main ThinkGeek store for their many amazing wares, but not as many are aware of the very cool work of their Solutions counterparts. Those peeps make online stores and official merchandise for major gaming brands including Betheseda and BioWare. I know you love their games, but I’d bet you’d love their awesome merch too.

We can’t tell you exactly what they’re going to be giving away, but if the previews we’ve been seeing are any indication, you definitely have every reason to be excited about it.

We’re so grateful to all our sponsors and can’t wait for you to meet them. If you haven’t already seen: we’re going to have a great photobooth brought to you by Quirk Books and one of their newest titles: The Fan Girl’s Guide to the Galaxy. And swag for EVERYONE from the amazing WattPad. Music will be going all night with the awesome LA-based band, The Filthy Souls, thanks to High Voltage Magazine. And of course, you’ll be thirsty after walking around all day, so we’re really excited for you to meet Kombucha on Tap, who will be bringing us fresh Kombucha and brewed ice coffee.

I can’t believe it’s finally happening this week!

If you still haven’t gotten your tickets for Geeks Go Glam, you gotta do it! Visit geeksgoglam.com to pre-order! (That’s important! We won’t be offering tickets on site!)

My Number One Rule for SDCC

Your first San Diego Comic Con is a little like being thrown into an apocalypse. People are screaming, crying, sleeping outside, eating whatever they can find and generally don’t smell awesome. But it’s the best kind of apocalypse ever.

After going for a few years now, I really only have one rule for enjoying Comic Con: Don’t expect to do everything and really ENJOY the things you do get to do.

The truth is that you’re really not going to get every exclusive toy you want. You’re really not going to get tickets to all the Nerd HQ panels you want. You really aren’t going to get into Hall H unless you sleep outside. These are the things. These are the rules. And so, if you reset your expectations and just think: I’m going to enjoy the SHIT out of whatever I do get to do, you’ll have an awesome time.

One of the ways I really enjoy the shit out of what I do get to do is that I meet so many new people. I find that the collection of new friends I acquire each year at SDCC far outweighs the value of any toys or the memory of any panels. So, turn to a complete stranger and ask about them. You never know, you might end up like me and meeting some of your new best friends. There is a real good chance that the person who is also at the Orphan Black panel has other things in common with you and even if they don’t, you get to nerd out with a fellow Clone Club member.

It’s nearly here. Must go pack!

Introducing More Geeks Go Glam Sponsors!

Geeks Go Glam is going to be wicked awesome. Yup. It’s true. And it’s not just because I’m behind the scenes and know all the killer details. It’s because I can now tell you about more amazing details!

We’re so excited to announce our musical sponsor, High Voltage Magazine! And of course, we have to announce that they are bringing us Dave of The Filthy Souls as our musical act for the evening!

You may already know that Megan of The Nerdy Girlie works for High Voltage Magazine, but none the less, having even MORE of our nerdy loves in attendance makes me even more excited for the party to start!

High Voltage Magazine was created in 2003 by music fanatics who wanted to share their love for music with the rest of the world. They started as an online publication and in March of 2006 their first print issue of High Voltage Magazine was released.

Maybe you have been wondering what we’re going to drink at our party. I mean, after all that walking around, you’ll probably be dehydrated and malnourished. Well, we are happy to tell you that we’ve partnered with Kombucha on Tap to offer everyone fresh Kombucha during the party! Kombucha On Tap distributes the best kombucha & craft draft coffee on tap to restaurants, bars, health spas, coffee shops, businesses, homes, & more. They are a really fantastic little company and we’re excited for you to be able to meet them. You can learn more about them here.

We’re so grateful to all our sponsors and can’t wait for you to meet them.
