Lady Geek of the Week: Eleanor Lutz

Meet Eleanor Lutz (@eleanor_lutz). She’s a biology nerd and graphic design rockstar. With a degree in molecular biology from the University of Washington and a passion for design, she makes ridiculously cool infographics explaining and glorifying the natural world. She’s also our Lady Geek of the Week.

Lutz is taking a year off between college and real life to devote herself to her designs, which you can find over at Tabletop Whale. She’s pulling back the world, layer by layer, and showing us what it’s made of. Check out her designs yourself! You’ll be fascinated. We’ve posted one of our favorites, tracking the flight of various creatures, below.

Read on for Lutz’s interview with BGC to find out where her passions all started and where she finds inspiration.

Q: How did you discover your passion for design and biology?

A: Growing up I always loved drawing and making things, and I guess I never grew out of it. As for biology, it was my favorite class in middle and high school so I picked that as my major for college.

Q: Where do you find your inspiration in life?

A: I love reading books and browsing the internet! I think most of my inspiration comes from photos and articles I see online.

Q: Your taking a year off after college to devote yourself to Tabletop Whale. What do you hope to accomplish in this year?

A: With the year off, I was mostly hoping to try a lot of new projects and really see what it would be like to work as a freelance designer for a year.

Q: If you could take any fictional character out for a drink, whom would you choose?

A: The Hobbit was my favorite book growing up, so I would probably choose Bilbo Baggins. I love to cook, so I feel like we would get along pretty well.

Q: What would you tell your 13-year-old self?

A: To not worry too much about what other people think and just enjoy being a teenager.

Weird science: your birthday may determine biology

The season in which babies are born can have a dramatic and persistent effect on how their biological clocks function. That is the conclusion of a new study published online on Dec. 5 by the journal Nature Neuroscience. … The imprinting effect, which was found in baby mice, may help explain the fact that people born in winter months have a higher risk of a number of neurological disorders including seasonal affective disorder (winter depression), bipolar depression and schizophrenia.
