You know what the most important grown up purchase you will ever make is? Your mattress. And then there’s the wondrous addition of all the things that go on it to make it your personal heaven. My interest in sleep is grounded entirely in the soft, warm, generally amazing feeling of being cocooned in a wonderful comforter and pillow. (P.S. Can’t recommend the Fieldcrest Luxury Down hypoallergenic pillow at Target enough… it’s not online, but I promise it’s the effing best if you’re a side sleeper like me.)
I’ll wrap up my long-winded love letter to sleep with this list of pillowcases that will satisfy your geeky tendencies.
Urban Outfitters You Are Magical Pillowcases
You may never receive your letter from Hogwarts. Instead of endlessly mourning this sad reality, I suggest these pillowcases (above) may serve as a daily reminder that magic can be found in your regular muggle life. There may not be spells or owls in this world, but who knows what you’ll dream up with your head resting on this case. This set of two cases will run you $34.99
Get your “vintage” set on Etsy
A quick search for geek pillowcases on Etsy turns up a wide range of options. I use the term “vintage” because the superhero stylings of the 80s and 90s bedding already have a distinctively different look from what you might pick up today. For comparison, the Hunger Games and Avengers pillowcases in Hot Topic are embarrassingly Photoshopped and moodily styled. His and Hers Specs
My boyfriend and I both wear specs and as you can imagine, our glasses are not the same. Similarly, he prefers the fattest fluffiest pillows you can buy and I’m a lover of the flat and squat variety. This set from uVinyl on Etsy is pretty darn close to his glasses, so I find it charming. You can even have the date of your anniversary printed on the cases. (In case you forget that often…) This set of two is $32.99.
You may have never heard Caroline Hadilaksono’s name, but if you’re a Harry Potter fan, then you’ve definitely seen her work.
Her Experience Hogwarts Travel Posters series are charming and hit right at the hearts of Harry Potter lovers.
Hadilaksono says of the posters:
“The idea behind these travel posters…they promote the magical world as travel destinations to non-magical people.”
Hadilaksono is an illustrator and storyteller who has worked on projects like The League or Moveable Type and the Appetites app for the iPad.
I, of course, have to sit and stare the HP posters in awe. I also appreciated that she posted the full process of designing them on her blog. Seeing how something beautiful is made is always so inspiring and rewarding. I never get bored of it.
Now, it appears that Hadilaksono is working at OkCupid, but if your an HP lover looking to support an incredible artist, go buy one or two or three of the travel posters. Be sure to check out the rest of her work too.
The New York Times wrote the most wonderful little NOTICED article on the Cambridge Satchel Company. Couldn’t find it online, so here’s the text:
Satchels from the Cambridge Satchel Company, reminiscent of the school bags of 1950s England, made an emphatic appearance at New York Fashion Week. It’s likely that most fans, including the stylist Brad Goreski (above left), are attracted to the unisex bags because of their fluorescent colors and friendly prices (around $15 to $250), but the bags’ back story is good, too. Upon learning that her daughter was being bullied, Julie Deane, in Cambridge, England, set out to earn the money to send her children to private school. Reading the Harry Potter books with her family, she drew upon the bags that Harry and friends carried at Hogwarts. She made samples, bloggers got wind, and now she has a multimillion dollar business, and starlets, like the enchanting Elle Fanning, toting her bags. They are available at cambridgesatchel.com, with custom embossing, if you like, and come November they will be at Bloomingdale’s. P.S. The kids are in private school.
The true story of the boy wizard GoldNimbus73.
My brother made the best birthday card ever this year. Last year, we went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter around this time and it was such a great experience for all three of us. Here’s his sweet blog post about it.
I’ve always preferred making birthday cards for people as opposed to buying them. I feel it’s a far more heartfelt and meaningful way to show someone how you feel. Moreover, I quite enjoy the challenge that goes into making a card that really connects with a person (and has special meaning for only that person).
With that in mind, behold my sister’s birthday card for this year. She is about as big a Potterhead as a person can be, so this seemed appropriate.
Pictured are my renditions of my sister Elizabeth (she of Being Geek Chic), her boyfriend and my friend TJ (he of Son of Minnesota), and myself. It’s funny because, a drunk man in a Caribou Coffee once told us we had a Harry, Ron and Hermione vibe about us. I leave it to those who know us to ponder both my drawing ability (or lack thereof) and the astuteness of that drunk Caribou patron…
Happy birthday, sis.
