Maps are sort of a thing in sci-fi. I remember after reading The Hobbit in the Eighth Grade I spent an hour placing all these great moments in the book to the map of The Shire.
Maps are also sort of a thing in home design. People love them because they’re a great conversation starter and have this historical element that makes a space feel timeless.
Now, if only all my favorite fictional places had a high-design map version for the home. I’m thinking: Merge the design sensibilities of the map offerings from These are Things with the fictional worlds we love. This isn’t a traditional Geeky at Home post… this is more a: dammit, why doesn’t this exist!? post.
Here’s a list of all the maps I feel should be designed in this manner and then appear in my home right now:
1. The Shire
2. Panem
3. Westeros
4. Hogsmeade
5. United Federation of Planets
I think I just invented an Etsy shop. Who wants to go in on this business idea with me!?
Love this. What 9 cities would you feature?
Mine are:
1. Minneapolis, MN
2. Nashville, TN
3. Lake Vermillion, MN
4. London, England
5. Paris, France
6. Laguna Niguel, CA
7. Jackson, WY
8. Orlando, FL
9. Mt. Iron, MN

I have a terrible soft spot for maps and designer Jen Adrion understands my plight. It is exceptionally difficult to find a modern world map that is attractive, stylish and appropriate for your average home. Her shop, which she co-owns with equally talented partner Omar Noory, These are Things is home to some of the best maps I have ever seen. I don’t say that lightly!
As with many home design conundrums, Adrion and Noory were searching and searching for the perfect world map to add to their home. What they discovered is that there were basically ZERO modern world maps on the market that met their design-savvy aesthetic. So like true DIYers, they made their own. And the results were marvelous.
When they had many, many extra maps they decided to try and sell them. Nearly a year later, they’ve turned map making into their full-time job. Isn’t that what all creative types dream of?!
I have to admit that I’m totally jealous, but the key take-away to Adrion’s story is that smart, internet-savvy people can make this happen too. In fact, she even named her blog “Making It!” which further proves the point!
If you pay attention to her blog, you’ll learn some key things from Adrion. Great taste, strong instincts and taking a chance on something small can turn into a serious career in the internet age. Be opportunistic! Be nimble! Be committed! All these things are echoed in business classes across the world, but you can get it for free by watching business women you admire. So for that (and the fact that I’m completely obsessed with my map!) Adrion is our Lady Geek of the Week.
