Being Geek Chic

sidebar-about

me

Being Geek Chic is the yammerings of a Midwestern nerd named Elizabeth Giorgi. My vision impairment is real, which is frustrating because I really would like to see a 3D movie.

Finding Inspiration: Your next craft project

Hardcore DIYers find inspiration from myriad sources. The web, magazines, books and the world around them. However, if you’re anything like me, you get to the point where you feel like you’ve simply seen it all before.

Another upholstered dining chair? Yay, another 1 yard pattern project. (le sigh). The sign of a true DIY master is one who can dream up inspiration for projects all on ones own. The big question is, where should I go for new, inventive and innovative inspiration?

    Here’s some places to try:

    1. Go outside. It’s simple. Breathe the fresh air. Feel the earth beneath your feet. Take a look up, down and around you. You are certain to find something, somewhere that gives you an idea. Whether it’s a color palette, a mix of textures or a sound - it’s out there. On Monday, I wrote about how you could bring autumn indoors, literally, but there’s something to be said for appreciating how mother nature gave us a LOT to work with for decor inspiration.

    2. Go window shopping. Whether it’s the high-end stores or the mall shops, there is plenty of awesome imagination coming to life in those windows. Think of Simon Doonan’s window displays at Barney’s in New York. He is constantly challenging what items are “used for” and so should you.

    3. Read some fiction. I often say that the best kind of art is art that is about something. I really mean that. And I think it applies to all parts of our lives. When I was reading The Millennium Series, I honestly thought about making Swedish meatballs on more than one occasion. Plus, I can honestly say that some of my accessory purchases have been inspired by this question: “would this appear in Dumbledore’s office?” Why can’t those principles apply in your DIY projects too.
