Every once in a very great while, I find an item which seems like it shouldn’t even be real - it’s that fantastic. Corset Wonderland’s Nintendo Lolita Skirt is equal parts geeky, pretty and well-designed. The shape is perfect for a lot of body shapes and transitions from season to season to season.
You’ve probably heard a lot of fashion “experts” say this, but a crisp white shirt is a wardrobe staple. This one (Old Navy, $26.50) could be tucked into the skirt with nearly all the buttons buttoned and the red necklace (Piperlime, $45) on top of that. It’s a subtle hint to vintage style and on trend right now.
If anyone ever told you that wearing green and red together makes you look like a Christmas tree: punch them. A green purse paired (Cole Haan, $229) with an equally colorful bracelet (Banana Republic, $35) adds to the preppy look. Don’t be afraid of pairing these colors! Which is why Essie’s “Well Red” is a nice addition to the colorful look as well.
I can’t forget to mention my love of “greige” and scallops. These grey/beige AKA “greige” booties (Target, $20.98) with these scallops that remind me of the clouds are charming and a great neutral to add to the look.
Corset Wonderland will make the skirt custom to your size for $75, which is a great deal for custom clothing.

We’re not all carving Van Gogh’s - so how can we get a totally awesome pumpkin this Halloween without getting completely overwhelmed? Well, the answer is by sticking to iconic shapes.
As much as I would love to master anything that looked remotely close to these crazy detailed Star Wars pumpkins, I know my limits. Last year, I was fresh off a trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter when I made my “modern Potter” pumpkin for my front stoop. The idea was simple: stick to the two most common things associated with Harry - his lightning scar and his round spectacles.
This year, I hope to pull of a simple Mockingjay and will share my results with you, but this all got me thinking that it would be worth pointing out some simple, fun and nerdy pumpkin carvings that you could do in no time at all.
Bob-omb from Mario Brothers
This one is so incredibly simple and cute, it would be a shame to pass it up. Take a pumpkin and carve out two eyes. Paint it black and use a piece of cardboard to cut out the winder for the back. Then, use some materials from around the house or a little painted styrofoam to embellish the top and the feet.

Pumpkin Pi
I love dual meanings. Pi Pumpkin. Pumpkin Pi. Take your pick. Either way, this baby is a winner. It’s simple, funny and incredibly easy to pull off in 15 minutes or less.
This pumpkin inspiration is courtesy of GirlGoneGeekBlog.com, but go ahead and google it. I’m warning you now that if you’re hungry this is not a great idea. There, you’ve been warned. No go carve.
In Memory: Steve Jobs
This one is pretty self-explanatory and a little more difficult to execute. You almost need to be a pumpkin carving pro in my opinion to navigate all those little spaces around his eyes, but you could focus on JUST the apple and still get an iconic and memorable effect for your pumpkin.
For the brave souls who want to give this one a try, there’s a template available for download from Pink Ray Gun here.
I’ve been carrying my Nintendo DS around a lot more lately, because I’ve been doing a lot of location based shoots, so Mario and I are becoming fast friends again. One thing I wish happened in real life that happens in the Italian Plumber themed game is that if you encounter a mushroom, you become bigger, stronger and more immune. If only!
So I’m honoring the magic mushroom this week…
Teal and red are the most wonderful colors on their own, but combined they not only make a bold statement, but they play off the color spectrum. The teal almost acts as blue would on the color scale, so it provides a bold contrast that is sure to get you noticed. Here, the dress is a classic and would work with any statement shoe, jewelry item or handbag. Of course, I’m living on a budget and always want to pair more expensive investment pieces with inexpensive items, so these red Mary Janes from Target are a great buy. They look very similar to styles at much more expensive retailers. While teal and red might not be an obvious choice, it’s easy to see why they make such great lovers.
For option 2, I decided to go for something more casual.
Think Casual Friday with a white twist. Both the sweater and the two-finger ring are from Express (I know, right!) and are super affordable. I adore the dolmen sleeve, because I think it’s the perfect transition piece. In addition, there couldn’t be anything more comfortable. I also think far too many people forget about white jeans for the office. You won’t be encountering the same staining hazards at work, so go for them. A wide leg, white denim trouser can easily function as a staple in any wardrobe. This fall, look for handbags with texture. This Kate Spade piece is out of my budget, but I love the fact that the polished idea of a bow is given a new attitude with the wool texture.
The amazing Mario Mushroom necklace is via Etsy artist Dearden Design who also sells turtle shell bracelets… trust me, they’re a must see.
